Does anyone out there know where I can get a GOOD set of plans to make my own cam grinder for some model engine projects I would like to start. I would try to design one but i have never used one so the working theory of the machine is non-existent at this point. 03-24-2004, 07:38 PM #2. motordude.

Proper operation means that the lobe and lifter don't rub but roll together at the same surface speed. This is why all cam manufacturers insist on new lifters with a new cam or even putting the same used cam in a different engine block. Bottom line is polishing the lifter is OK providing you can produce that 40 inch radius again. Good luck.

Within the limitations of what I'm doing the follower wheel will be around 10" (250mm), the same as the grinding wheel max dia, and the masters 7-8" (175-200mm) The machine has a table travel of 22", so can do most stuff between lobes.

One of my current projects is turning an old van norman piston grinder into a cam grinder for small engines (cam length up to 10"). Took me a year to find the machine. So far the worst part has been trying to work up a plan for indexing the cams in the machine for various centerlines. This will save on the amount of patterns I need to make.
